BepInEx on a Valheim dedicated server

Source checked 29 Sept 2026; game-version match unverified.Project docsOfficial

BepInEx is a plugin framework for Unity games. Valheim mods usually run through a community-customised pack of it, BepInExPack_Valheim, published on Thunderstore. None of this is official Iron Gate software: Iron Gate says it has no official mod support and cannot guarantee that any mods will be functional when 1.0 released (Valheim 1.0 FAQ).

Status when checked (2026-09-29)

Item What the source says Source
Pack version BepInExPack_Valheim 5.4.2351, published 2026-09-24; not marked deprecated Thunderstore
Base BepInEx Repository is active (last push 2026-09-20); latest release v5.4.23.5, published 2026-02-08 BepInEx on GitHub
What the pack changes Preconfigured BepInEx.cfg with the console enabled, scripts to run game and dedicated server on Linux, and a change that forces Valheim’s isModded flag on after the chainloader loads Thunderstore README
Where to ask for help The pack’s README says not to ask in the official BepInEx Discord, because the Valheim pack is a customised version; it points to its maintainers’ communities instead Thunderstore README
Which Valheim builds it supports Not stated in the pack’s README Thunderstore README

Compatibility with the current game: what is known

The pack does not list supported Valheim builds. The only tested-versions list we found is the Valheim Plus project’s COMPATIBILITY.md, which records Valheim 1.0.15 (n-40) with BepInExPack_Valheim 5.4.2350 as working with Valheim Plus 0.10.2.0. That list says to assume any combination not listed does not work. As of our check, it does not list Valheim 1.0.16 (announced 2026-09-25) or pack version 5.4.2351 (Valheim Plus COMPATIBILITY.md).

So: do not assume the latest pack works with the latest game build, and do not assume every mod works with every build or with crossplay. Test on a copy of your world.

Installing on a server

The pack’s README describes these steps (Thunderstore README):

  1. Start with a clean, unmodified Valheim folder.
  2. Download the pack with the Manual Download button and extract it into a folder that is not the game folder.
  3. Move the contents of the BepInExPack_Valheim folder into the Valheim folder.
  4. Linux, server: make start_server_bepinex.sh executable (chmod u+x start_server_bepinex.sh), edit its launch parameters as you would with Valheim’s own launch script, then run it. If it worked you will see BepInEx bootstrap messages in the terminal.
  5. Windows: the README says no configuration is needed and to run the game; it does not spell out the dedicated-server variant, and we do not invent it.

For the parameters to put in the launch script see the launch options page.

The README also lists managed hosts that offer automatic BepInEx installation; see the hosting comparison. The README notes some of its links are affiliate links; this site links the plain domains only.

Crossplay and consoles

Consoles have no mod support (official 1.0 FAQ), and we found no source on modded servers on the Crossplay backend: see crossplay.
